Coretta Scott was born on April 27, 1927 in Marion, Alabama. She was born to Obadiah and Bernice Scott. Coretta was the third youngest out of four children. She had two older sisters named Edythe and Eunice and a younger brother named Obadiah. Sadly, her sister Eunice died as a young child. Her mother was known as a singer and later worked as a bus driver, a church pianist, and she worked with her husband at his businesses. Coretta's father worked as a fireman and he later ran a barber shop and a general store.

Education

Coretta went to Lincoln High School and in 1945 she graduated as valedictorian. After graduating high school she went to Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and education. She then was awarded a fellowship to the New England Conservatory of music. Coretta graduated from there with a degree in voice and violin.
Marriage

While Coretta was at New England Conservatory of music she met Martin Luther King Jr. He attended Boston University studying theology. Not long after she graduated from New England Conservatory she and Martin got married on June 18, 1953 and later had four kids named Yolanda King, Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King, and Bernice King. Once they were married they moved to Montgomery Alabama. There Martin worked as a pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. She gave up her dreams of becoming a singer to help her husband.
